Kavita Suri is one of the pioneers in South Asian bridal make up, fusing eastern traditions with western trends in beauty. In fact, she did my sister’s make up for her wedding over 10 years ago and has gone on to open up her own medical wellness spa (in the heart of Yorkville, Toronto), a beauty academy and was the principal make up artist for South Asian bridal magazine Suhaag for 9 years. She’s also had the pleasure to work with entertainment heavyweights like Hollywood actress Jada Pinkett Smith and Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra.
The acne struggle is REAL. I’m not talking about a few small pimples around the time of the month or after a bad weekend of binge eating. I’m talking about waking up everyday unsure if a monster has festered under the skin’s surface. If you don’t know what that feels like, then consider yourself lucky and be cognizant of what you say to others who suffer from it. If you’re unsure what not to say, here’s a good place to start. Believe it or not, these are real things people have actually said to me over a lifetime!
“What’s wrong with your face?”
Thanks, I really had no idea that I have a bunch of painful pimples all over my face. I mean, I do just look in the mirror everyday hoping that it miraculously changed over night, but it hasn’t. I guess I didn’t notice…thanks for pointing it out so subtly.
The cosmetic industry is a vast and endless abyss leaving you clueless about which product to buy. If you go into Sephora, aside from the over whelming selection, each customer services representative will have their own favourite. So how do you know what to buy? I’ve tried so many products and I have the VIB Rouge status at Sephora to prove it – and to think, Sephora’s only one of my go to places for make up and skin care! I share with you my top 5 favourite make up items (in no particular order) that through trial and error have lasted the test of time and I’m always running to repurchase as soon it runs out.
My sister is a mother to three beautiful daughters and a passionate educator in the Peel District School Board. Coming from a family of three girls, she often compares how we were raised versus how she is raising her daughters. Us three sisters were constantly compared to eachother, where one was too outspoken, one was too messy and one didn’t dress up enough. My mom still compares us and in conversation with my sister, she explained to me that she sees vast differences in her daughters as well. They’re simply not built the same. The eldest likes to play sports and human interaction. While the middle one can occupy herself in whatever games her imagination conjures up for hours which often leads to chaos and mess. My mother saw this as rebellion, where my sister, as a teacher, understands that each child is different and has their own way of discovering and learning. The middle one isn’t necessarily messy, she’s creative and inventive. Sure everyone loves a clean home, so as a mother, my sister can tell her to stop making a mess and clean up but she sees that as limiting her. She chooses to remain patient so that her middle daughter can explore her inventive side.
As eyebrow guru Anastasia Soare will tell you, brows frame the face and make a world of a difference in how a woman looks. In fact, when Beyoncé was transitioning from girl group to her alter-ego Sasha Fierce (now Queen Bey), she relied on Damone Roberts, the King of Eyebrows to transform her brows. Damone Roberts charges $150 plus for an eyebrow tweeze and up to $300 for house calls. For those who don’t have that kind of money, here are some quick tips on how to get the perfect set of brows.
