How To Get Rid of Cellulite
Summer is officially upon us, which means bikini clad weather and short shorts. Such wardrobe doesn’t give much way to hide those unsightly dimples that god has so graciously blessed us with. We ALL have cellulite, and if you don’t, then over 80% of the female population secretly hates you. For the rest of you that are that are human, here’s how I manage the appearance of cellulite.
Think of cellulite as soft fat deposits where the more fat you have, the less space there is in your body. As a result, it pushes up against the skin’s surface, creating a dimpling effect. By working out, you’re building muscle where you have cellulite so you have muscle pushing up against the skin instead of fat; creating a more smooth looking surface.
Cellulite is simply toxic materials that have accumulated in your body’s fat cells and are trapped, unable to be eliminated from the body. So the more garbage in, the more cellulite out. To reduce the appearance of cellulite, stop it at the source. By eating healthy, you’re putting less toxins in your body and thus reducing the likelihood of cellulite forming.
DRINK LOTS OF WATER
If you’re anything like me, you probably cheat, and then there’s those weekends that you’re putting nothing but delicious toxins in your body. Detoxify your body by drinking plenty of water everyday. The more often you urinate, the more toxins are leaving your body.
I’ve noticed a major difference with dry brushing. Our skin is our largest organ and you can speed up the detoxification process by dry brushing. I typically dry brush once a day before hopping in the shower. Dry brushing your skin will kick start your lymphatic system, which helps you remove toxins from the body.
To dry brush, use a natural bristle brush with a long handle so you can reach all areas of your body.
Begin at your feet and move upward using long sweeping motions towards your heart. I start at my feet, go up the legs, then my arms, then lower back, stomach and then upper back towards the heart. A quick picture guide below.
An added bonus to dry brushing is that it also exfoliates dead skin cells – leaving your skin silky smooth!
ALTERNATE BETWEEN HOT & COLD IN THE SHOWER
Another way to kick start your lymphatic system is to alternate between hot and cold when in the shower. Try 10 seconds cold and then 10 seconds hot. You’re basically recreating the benefits of the Swedish Spa at home in your daily routine at a fraction of the price. It’s an easy way to help eliminate toxins from the body.
MASSAGE THE AREAS WITH CELLULITE
Besides feeling great, massage also aids with the stimulation of the circulation and lymphatic system. To further help reduce the appearance of cellulite, massage the problem areas with lotion or coconut oil. Or better yet, get your partner to massage you! (Queue Ryan Gosling GIF just because…)
BIRTH CONTROL CAUSES CELLULITE
I noticed that I had a lot more stubborn cellulite when I was using birth control. I’m not recommending you go off it, as this is a very personal choice. However, after going off it, I saw a visible difference within months. If you’re on birth control and can’t figure out how to get rid of your cellulite despite all your efforts, it’s important to note that this could be a cause.
I was on birth control for 7 years and must say that after seeing what it did to me in hindsight, I don’t want to go back on it. For more details on my birth control journey, check out a previous blog post here.
!!! A WORD OF CAUTION !!!
I’ve tried many cellulite fighting creams and they honestly don’t work! I’ve seen way more visible results with the items I’ve recommended above at a fraction of the price. These creams simply thin out your skin leaving it more prone to sunburn and peeling (especially if you wax). In fact, these cellulite creams are counter intuitive. The reason why cellulite is less visible on men versus women is because they have thicker skin – so how is a cream that thins out your skin going to reduce cellulite?! Take it from me, and stay away from the creams!
