Met Gala 2015: Best Dressed

To me, the Met Gala is the most anticipated red carpet event of the year. It’s the Superbowl of fashion where it really showcases one’s sense of style (or stylist). Unlike other red carpet events where you get all dolled up and ensure you’re on trend with the current season, the Met Gala has a theme. The Met Gala was formerly called the Costume Institute Gala which marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. Each year, the event celebrates the theme of that year’s Costume Institute exhibition. The challenge with this red carpet event is finding the perfect balance of being high fashion, without being too “costumey”.

Whenever the Met Gala has an outrageous theme such as Punk: Chaos to Couture in 2013 or this year’s China: Through the Looking Glass, the red carpet is full of either cheesy renditions of the theme or playing it completely safe. This year, most played it safe; some accessorized their boring gowns with a bold eyeliner and called it a day, while others just got the wrong country, cough…Selena Gomez…cough.

That being said, I round up my favourite looks of this year’s Met Gala – for me, it’s not about who had the nicest gown, it’s how they found the perfect balance between costume and couture.

Rihanna

Yes I’ve seen the memes comparing the cape to an omelette, but in person, this cape is far from it. I assure you that pictures don’t do this rich luxurious fabric with jaw dropping embroidery justice. China has always been known for its rich textiles and this cape showcased just that. While most people played up the color red to emulate the theme, Rihanna focused on yellow-gold, a colour that is also deeply entrenched in the Chinese culture. Rihanna is a fashion queen and never disappoints. She did exactly what you’re supposed to do at the Met Gala – take chances and make an entrance! She pulled the look together perfectly with her pixie haircut, head accessory and necklace.

Beyonce

After we’re done oggling at this amazing body which must be the result of some insane vegan diet, we can then appreciate how Beyonce’s daring look was a perfect concoction of couture and costume. The jewels on this lace bodice dress were perfectly placed, leaving just enough to the imagination. But what really sealed the deal was the sleek high pony tail – bringing it all together – the devil was truly in the detail.

Sienna Miller

One of my favourite fashion icons of all time, socialite/fashionista Sienna Miller is always on point and this Met Gala was no different. She took elements of traditional Chinese clothing and incorporated it into a pant suit – down to the tassle earrings and belt – a perfect touch!

Zendaya

Zendaya is well on her way to becoming a fashion icon. First her gorgeous look at the Oscars, mixing highs and lows – dreadlocks and couture and now playing up her cute physique with this fun dress and accessories to kill.

Emily Ratajkowski

An honourable mention goes to Emily Ratajkowski. Although not the best dressed, she definitely gave many of her peers on the red carpet a run for their money – literally. She showed that you don’t have to break the bank to be stylish.
